But what is the picture on rabbits in general - could a Jewish child keep a rabbit as a pet, for instance? (Where the idea of actually killing and eating Thumper would never be considered). Is it enough to refrain from eating the meat, or is any contact with a ritually unclean annimal also to be shunned? A child petting a cuddly but non-kosher animal (Could a Jewish vet treat somebody else's pigs, for instance, or a Jewish zookeeper go into an enclosure with warthogs or camels - would this be understood?) I googled "hare bestiary and found that Pliny the Elder believed hares lived for as many years as they had "folds in their bowels". I can see where this could lead to some confused translation.
But, given the context, I think Barnabas was referring to the hare's proclivity to mate indiscriminately. He seems to have had a keen interest in that aspect of nature.Baradahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15587527599474486585noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5342504119725395825.post-34041946584721707122011-04-25T05:49:13.166-07:002011-04-25T05:49:13.166-07:00- your references were very helpful by the way, th...- your references were very helpful by the way, thanks!Jenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03339737669533969521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5342504119725395825.post-33943783299693737872011-04-25T05:40:06.821-07:002011-04-25T05:40:06.821-07:00Hello- thanks so much for all this great info! I ...Hello- thanks so much for all this great info! I found your site because I was researching the rejected books of the Christian Bible, and found the book of Barnabus- specifically 10:6 was perplexing: "Barnabas 10:6
Moreover thou shalt not eat the hare. Why so? Thou shalt not be
found a corrupter of boys, nor shalt thou become like such persons;
for the hare gaineth one passage in the body every year; for
according to the number of years it lives it has just so many
orifices."

That is bizzare. Any more info on this? It's obvious now why this was not up for canon. I am 99% sure that rabbits do not gain an orifice for every year that they live. Is there any other reference to such a strange connection?Jenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03339737669533969521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5342504119725395825.post-28124844734725048532011-01-07T02:31:00.952-08:002011-01-07T02:31:00.952-08:00aI thought that rabbits do not chew the cud, wher...aI thought that rabbits do not chew the cud, wheras hairs do so I was suprised that rabbits were not kosher.
From Alanalanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04620775301783557292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5342504119725395825.post-21319737358696046192010-06-13T11:01:08.825-07:002010-06-13T11:01:08.825-07:00Yes, but can you tell us why rabbits are associate...Yes, but can you tell us why rabbits are associated with cowardice in Jewish folklore?
